The Permission Slips We Carry

· self awareness,personal growth,self worth,inner work,healing

Unbeknownst to most of us, we carry permission slips.

We wait to be picked, for the right circumstances, for another person’s behavior to give us what we have been longing for.

We sit in the “when” and the “if.” The “pick me” or the “there’s not enough until there is.”

All these places where we have unknowingly positioned ourselves to wait.

I have this image of a chair.

We sit at the edge of our seat, anticipating the arrival of something that will finally give us what we seek. Or we leap up, reaching for the very thing that serves the wound we carry.

I’m reminded of a child who jumps up to save a parent, to support them, to ease their suffering. The child learns that being useful brings acknowledgment, approval, perhaps even the proof that they are loved.

And in that experience, a definition of love begins to take shape.

Imagine what happens when that child grows into adulthood carrying that understanding. How many times might they find themselves jumping up to serve another, believing that love is something they must continually earn?

And how often do we do the same in our own ways?

We may spend years sitting in these chairs, waiting for something to arrive that will finally allow us to feel secure in our lives.

Yet how can we truly see the chair we are sitting on while we remain seated?

And what would it take for us to get up, turn around, and become curious about the very place we have been sitting?

Perhaps for the first time, we begin to see that the place we have been waiting from has shaped so much of what we have been reaching for.

The permission slip was never simply about receiving what we wanted. It was about the authority we had unknowingly placed outside ourselves.

And what becomes available when we recognize that?

We can begin to live from the understanding that our lives are ours to inhabit, that we have always had a place here, and that we can finally stop waiting to be given one. We get to discover our life from a different place.

With love and blessings,
