Why Changing Your Thoughts Isn't Always Enough

· personal growth,spirituality,manifestation,self awareness,emotional healing

We hear this all the time:

If you sit in lack, you create from lack.

If you focus on what you do not have, you create more of what you do not have.

Change your thoughts. Change your vibration. Think abundantly. Manifest differently.

There is truth somewhere within those teachings. And I think there are layers underneath them that deserve our attention.

Because if changing our thoughts were the whole answer, many of us would have repeated the right mantra by now and lived happily ever after.

We are far more complex than that.

You may want money because rent is due. You may want a relationship because you desire companionship. You may want your business to grow because you want to support yourself through work you love. You may want to travel, create, move, experience more of your life.

And underneath what you want there may also be fear.

Will I be okay?

Will there be enough?

Will I get to experience what I came here to experience?

Will life support me?

Two people can stand in almost identical circumstances and experience them completely differently.

One person may look at an unexpected expense and think, I will figure this out.

Another may feel their entire body tighten.

Same circumstance. Different internal experience.

Why?

Because we each meet life through our own filters.

Our histories, beliefs, experiences, emotions, family systems, and the ways we learned to survive and belong all become part of the way we interpret what is happening in front of us.

Even children raised in the same household can walk away carrying entirely different stories.

One becomes the person who takes care of everyone.

One learns to disappear.

One keeps moving, achieving, studying, or doing.

One decides there will never be enough.

One learns to expect life to catch them.

We each found our own relationship with what we experienced.

And this is where I think many teachings around manifestation move too quickly.

We try to change the thought before we have listened to what created it.

I have an image of opening a gift.

You untie the bow.

You gently open the paper.

Inside is another layer of cloth.

You open that.

Then another layer.

And another.

We tend to want to rip through all of it and get to the answer.

Fix the belief.

Clear the block.

Change the vibration.

Get the money.

Find the relationship.

Create the result.

Yet perhaps there is something else happening as we open each layer.

Perhaps we are meeting ourselves.

Eventually we may arrive somewhere beneath all the stories and labels, beneath everything we have decided about who we are and what life is.

Some people might call that the soul.

Some might call it God.

Spirit.

Consciousness.

The greater All.

I care less about the name than I do about the relationship.

Because somewhere underneath all these layers is a part of us that exists beyond the bank account, beyond the circumstance, beyond whether today’s evidence says there is enough.

I have been learning this in my own life.

I have reached certain doors again and again.

Eventually I had to ask a different question.

What is this door showing me?

What happens if I meet it differently?

What have I been trying to solve that may actually be asking me to listen?

There came a point when every technique, every attempt to control the thought, and every effort to make myself feel differently only brought temporary relief.

Curiosity began to take me somewhere else.

What is here?

What am I feeling?

What is this feeling trying to tell me?

What part of me has been waiting for a voice?

That can be uncomfortable.

I have felt anger.

Deep anger.

And when I allowed myself to actually hear it, the anger carried information. It showed me places where I had muted myself. Places where I had handed away authority. Places where I had made circumstances responsible for deciding how powerful, safe, valuable, or supported I was allowed to feel.

Sometimes the anger became tears.

Sometimes there were no answers at all.

There was simply something within me finally being heard.

That matters.

Sometimes an emotion simply wants to be heard. It carries information about how we are meeting this moment, what has been activated within us, and where something deeper may be asking for our attention

Your fear is information.

Your anger is information.

Your heaviness is information.

Your longing is information.

They are part of the conversation you are having with your life.

Money is a beautiful example because we attach so much meaning to it.

A number in a bank account can change how someone feels about themselves within seconds.

Suddenly they feel depleted.

Unsafe.

Ashamed.

Angry.

Powerless.

Less valuable.

And somewhere along the way, the number became an authority.

The deeper question then becomes:

Who has authority over how I experience myself?

What am I allowing to tell me who I am?

A friend once reflected something to me during one of my own difficult moments. The essence of it was, if you could see yourself the way we see you, you would experience this very differently.

They could see the fullness of me while I was staring at the circumstance.

They could see what I carried, what I gave, what I created, who I was.

There was no lack in what they were seeing.

That stayed with me.

Because sometimes our circumstances become so loud that they are the only thing we can hear.

This is why I keep returning to space.

A breath.

A walk.

A few quiet minutes before beginning the day.

A moment when there is nothing to solve.

Nothing to manifest.

Nothing to figure out.

Just space.

I sometimes experience it as a place of everything and nothing at once.

The mind loosens its grip.

The story gets quieter.

And something else has room to enter.

Maybe an idea comes.

Maybe an opportunity becomes visible.

Maybe emotion rises.

Maybe you simply feel your body soften.

Maybe nothing happens at all.

That moment still matters.

Because each time you experience yourself outside the grip of the story, even briefly, you discover there is more available to you than the story has been telling you.

Your hand begins to open.

And an open hand can receive something a clenched hand cannot.

So perhaps this week, instead of trying to make yourself feel abundant, give yourself a few moments each day to become spacious.

Breathe.

Walk.

Sit outside.

Feel your feet on the earth.

Let whatever comes forward have a voice.

If anger appears, hear it.

If tears come, let them.

If an idea arrives, notice it.

You do not have to turn any of it into an answer.

There is a voice within you that may have been waiting a very long time for your attention.

Sometimes the next movement begins simply because you finally listened.

Try it for a week.

And let me know what you discover.

With love and blessings,

Susan
